It was confirmed today that June Toronto PRO combine attendee and Union, New Jersey native Jonathan Firmino will head to Portugal next week, to trial with first division club Vitória Setúbal.
The 20-year old from New Jersey's success story came as the result of his strong performance at the Toronto scouting event. As well as recognition from Vitória's sporting director Rodolfo Vaz.
"What stood out about Jonathan was his presence on the field, he had a good physique, he spoke well, he didn’t try to overdue things, and kept the game simple," said Joe Funicello, Director of Scouting and CEO of SoccerViza. "Of course his age played a factor as well, this is a big opportunity for him and he has the potential to go from nobody knowing him here in America, to possibly being on a Portuguese premier league team. Thats what we do, we find undiscovered talent and put them in an environment where they can be seen. We see that clubs are starting to come to SoccerViza knowing we can help them find players," Funicello said.
Jonathan Firmino is the first success story to be confirmed in this summer's transfer window for SoccerViza, turning a great combine performance into an opportunity with the Portuguese club.
“Growing up I never really had the opportunity or was exposed to an event like this, SoccerViza opened up these doors for me," said Firmino. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to earn a professional contract with Vitória, I know it will be a challenge but I am ready," Firmino said.
