BI/Bolungarvik announced this week that SoccerViza founder Joe Funicello has been named as head coach for the 2016 season. The club, based in Isafjordur, Iceland, begins pre-season on March 1.
“I am excited to welcome Joe [Funicello] to the club,” Club Chairman Samuel Samuelsson said.
“He has played in Iceland before and is familiar with the league, and I believe that he will bring a new perspective to help us succeed this season.”
Funicello, 28, previously played in Iceland in the 2010, 2012, and 2013 seasons with Thor Akureryi, in the First Division and Premier League. While with Thor, Funicello appeared in the Europa League Qualifiers in 2013.
“I’m honored that the board of directors at BI has trusted this opportunity to me,” Funicello commented.
“BI is a club that I am looking forward to working with. They’re an ambitious club and after working with them last season, I am excited to have a full season in 2016. I want to thank the board for placing this trust in me, and I’m looking ahead to this year.”
Funicello began his professional career in the New York/New Jersey Metrostars (now with Red Bulls) organization, and then moving on to play with Real Maryland F.C., Thor Akureyri, IFK Mariehamn, Vaasan Palloseura, & FF Jaro.
Funicello retired from professional play in 2013, announcing a desire to pursue professional scouting and coaching with SoccerViza.
Funicello will step away from SoccerViza’s Player and Team Relations department in order to focus on coaching. While he remains as Chairman of SoccerViza’s Board of Directors, his role will be scaled back to consultation and guest speaking engagements while coaching and living full time in Iceland.
